Flood Emergency Appeal

The aftermath

On 26 September 2019 our shelter in Sinoe, Romania was overcome with flood water that rose over 1 meter high. Our entire shelter, buildings, barn and kennel enclosures have all been affected as a result with mud taking over every inch of ground.

Thankfully we started an emergency appeal that has allowed us to replace the 20 doggy houses that were damaged and we now have a stock of straw that will, we hope, see us through the Winter having lost our previous stores.

Our next priority is making life more comfortable for the 68 dogs living at the shelter with winter and the wet season fast approaching and mud all around.

Our first priorities now are replacing the missing and damaged fencing around the shelter and alongside this covering the mud in the dog kennels, barns and all the essential access areas in and around the shelter.

roofing repairs needed

Following these urgent repairs, we have 2 areas of roofing that will urgently need repaired - both of which are at risk of collapse or have collapsed.

The barn above the shelter is most urgent - housing a large number of dogs - work has already started slowly to add reinforced steel bars, we will use metal sheeting above the existing roofing, which will be removed piece by piece once the new roofing is in situ.

The main house has 2 small rooms for Florin to stay, however this was leaking last winter and following heavy snow and rainfall, the roofing has now collapsed into the house and in the part where there are dogs living. We next need to repair this roof area.

We have been busy cotacting builders merchants and now have the following list of items and costings required for the shelter repairs.

Step by step, we start the work

During the week starting 21 October, Florin has worked his socks off clearing the grass and weeds to allow the access road in to be accessible. The rear gate has been welded and repaired with the help of Mugurel the welder.

This week we also took delivery of our first 35 tonnes of large gravel to try (we hope) and start to cover the mud. Unfortunately the access in was still too muddy so the entire load was shifted single handily by Florin. The gravel has been installed first into the big barn. Once all areas as covered we hope to be able to compact this down and cover with smaller gravel. This will take some time with one pair of hands, but we hope it can be done before further bad weather is upon us.

Progress on the Roofing work

Our one man army Florin has been super hard at work today, single handed getting the first new sheets up on the roof. More steel bars have also been added for reinforcement.

Bit by bit we are starting to buy the materials we need for each days work. We are so thankful to Florin for working so hard each day to start the improvements needed. Thank you for donating and sharing and helping us make progress

A gentleman is a gentleman even in a dog skin. Mr Shy can't sleep on rocks, he took his blanket out from his doggy house and make himself comfy.

The dogs are starting to enjoy their homes again as we slowly start to cover the mud in all the kennels. Thank you for donating and helping us purchase the large rocks needed for this first level of cover
